*** You can’t win all your athletes over ***
“If you waste your time a talking
To the people who don’t listen
To the things that you are saying
Who do you thinks gonna hear?
And if you should die explaining how
The things that they complain about
Are things they could be changing
Who do you thinks gonna care?”
– Kris Kristoffersson, to beat the devil
Sometimes in this crazy game your athletes or clients just won’t listen. This will probably never leave you, you’ll always have athletes on your squads, usually trainers, that think they know more.
I used to in the past fly off the handle with these characters and invest stupid amount of energy playing the convincing game, this is a fools errand. Focus on the players that really want help, focus on building systems and a feel good mood in camp, focus on great communication, great banter and world class training and the rest will fall into place.
The good news is I have had several former athletes tell me ” I wished I had listened more coach etc”.. These people can then be a great advocates for what you do… So never fall out with them like I used to do, just be super professional.
It’s extremely hard to hate anyone who is super professional.
People in general will only ever do what they think is right for them, regardless of evidence to the contrary.
Now go read a book, listen to a podcast or visit another coach and keep getting better –
